Get connected, stay connected
Most small businesses have a third party that hosts their websites and provides FTP storage. The physical location of the host servers is relatively unimportant to the client businesses.
Of course, there are a few items that should be verified… For example, hosting facilities in Houston may be subject to the flooding and power outages associated with hurricanes. Unless the facility has multiple “pipes” to the Internet, outages can occur when the connection is broken.
Once the physical characteristics have been approved, then the potential vendor should be evaluated for information security issues. Have adequate measures been taken to prevent hackers from stealing or destroying data, or from damaging your website? Are backups in place and executed on a frequent-enough basis to ensure proper recovery? Is there a valid plan for failover in the event of equipment failure?
